The following examples of epoxy resins and ion exchange resins show the importance of maintaining a stable environment.

Temperature, humidity and sun exposure in epoxy resins

Epoxy resin is the most common variety of synthetic resin. It is used as a thermosetting polymer for creating adhesives and composite materials.

It is recommended to keep the temperature between 21-27ºC. Above that, the epoxy will react faster, resulting in shorter mixing times and faster cure times. The epoxy may also burn if the temperature is too high during the mixing process.

Temperature changes can also cause condensation problems, so maintaining a constant temperature during storage or transport is also an important factor.

Excessive humidity can cause blushing, a sticky, oily or waxy film on the surface layer of cured epoxy that makes it look cloudy and less clear.

Moisture in the air can also cause the epoxy to foam or have an extreme reaction and cure too quickly.

It is recommended to keep humidity levels below 85% and ideally between 50-60%.

In terms of sun exposure, the sun's UV rays can cause epoxy coatings to turn yellow and even crack if left exposed for too long.

Temperature, humidity and sun exposure in ion exchange resins

Ion exchange resins are used in water purification, catalysis in organic reactions and in the pharmaceutical sector as bile acid sequestrants, mainly as hypolipidemic agents and for lowering cholesterol.

Ion exchange resins should be stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight at 5-40ºC.

Storage or transport temperatures above 40ºC will result in the premature loss of anionic resin, especially that stored in OH form.

Although cationic resins can withstand higher temperatures (up to 80ºC), it is best to store all resins under similar conditions.

Storage temperatures below 0ºC may cause the resin to freeze. Although a few freeze-thaw cycles are generally harmless, repeated freeze-thawing may cause the ion exchange resin to wear by physically breaking the resin beads.

Bear in mind that resins must not be exposed to air as it makes them dry out and shrink. As these resins reabsorb water, they are easy to break down due to the rapid re-expansion of the resin beads.
